First, just a reminder that your projects are due today by 5:00pm in Canvas. As I explained in the final announcement last week, your projects should be turned in via a blog post on your site. That post should contain your project in one of the following ways:

If you created a video, you must upload that video somewhere (YouTube, Vimeo, etc) and embed the video in the post!

If you created some kind of audio, you must upload your audio (I recommend uploading to SoundCloud), and you must embed the audio in the post.

If you created a Web site, you must take a screen shot and link to the site from that image.

If you created a Prezi, you must embed it in your post.

if you're not sure what to do with your project, talk to me!

Some of you have contacted me because you had difficulty with uploading to YouTube; if I've been in touch with you about these issues, you're fine.

For every 12 hours that your assignment is late, I will be deducting 1/2 letter grade!

Second, the week after Thanksgiving break we will begin presentations on Thursday. If you haven't yet signed up for a presentation slot, now is the time to do so. I will be assigning un-scheduled people to remaining slots beginning next Monday. Sign up for slots here. Make sure you sign up on the page that corresponds to the time your section meets!

Third, some people have been asking for more details about what should be covered in the presentation. I've gone ahead and added more specific details to the Presentation assignment in Canvas. It contains a suggested presentation model, but you are not required to follow that model. As long as you cover what I ask for in the assignment, you can take whatever approach you want. Please review this and let me know if you have questions!!

Finally, have a great Thanksgiving -- I'll see you next Tuesday!

1. Summarize the Wikipedia research you did on a particular fandom. What fandom did you research and why? What did you find when looking at the revision history? You should have at least one interesting thing you unearthed in the revisions. What do you make of the revisions you found? What did you find on the Talk page? You should have at least one interesting thing you unearthed on the Talk page. What do you make of the Talk page discussion(s) you found?

2. Share the GIF Storify you worked on during class.

By next Tuesday, everyone should have posted their projects online and written a blog post sharing their project.

If you created a video, you must upload that video somewhere (YouTube, Vimeo, etc) and embed the video in the post!

This post must be submitted in Canvas by 5:00pm on Tuesday to the Digital Project assignment. I will deduct 5 points (1/2 letter grade) for every 12 hour period that a project is turned in late.
Announcement: Week 13 Assignments and Announcementstag:canvas.instructure.com,2015-11-13:/discussion_topics/discussion_topic_29741372016-09-08T20:27:10-04:002015-11-13T15:03:22-05:00Martha Burtis
This week, we'll be looking at the phenomenons of "fan culture" and "fandoms" -- in particular at the interplay between our identity and these activities. During class, we'll be working on a fan-focussed media project. In preparation, make sure you read/review all of the following. There will be a closed-book quiz on Tuesday about these resources:

Initial Blog Post

First, reflect upon your own impressions of fan culture based upon our readings. How do you feel about fans who insert themselves into different narratives (from films, tv shows, music, books, etc) and change those stories to suit their own personal identities or needs. Do you think the creators should encourage or discourage this kind of activity. Generally, who do you think "owns" this kind of cultural product (both the originals and the fan-created extensions). Do you think we should all be free to reuse and remix popular culture as a way of expressing our relationships with the original works?

Next, reflect upon your own relationship with fan culture. Do you participate in any activities online that would be classified as fandom? What are they and how did you get involved in them. Do you feel like your status as a fan of particular movies, tv shows, books, music, etc. plays a role in your own construction of your digital identity and/or the way people perceive you?

Finally, if you don't actively participate in fan culture, reflect upon why that is. Is there something that you find off-putting about these practices? What and why?
Announcement: Week 12 Wrap-uptag:canvas.instructure.com,2015-11-12:/discussion_topics/discussion_topic_29723082016-09-08T20:27:10-04:002015-11-12T14:24:19-05:00Martha Burtis
For your final blog post this week (due Friday by 5), share whatever your group produced: embed your video or image or whatever else you created. Discuss about the narrative you decided to tell and how you settled on it. Do you think the narrative could actually happen? Why or why not?

Also, include an update on your final project (now due Tuesday, November 24th by 5:00PM).

We've circled around this issue many times over the last weeks, so this is an opportunity to talk about it more directly. Please be aware that one of our readings (The New Yorker article) deals with a very difficult story about a victim of cyberbullying who committed suicide, and the audio we will be listening to talks frankly about suicide. We'll talk about this reading in class this week, and it's important to me that everyone feel safe reading it and discussing it. If you have any issues or difficulties with the topics being covered, please let me know.

On Tuesday, I will not be in class, but class will be meeting. My colleague, Jessica Reingold, will be leading discussion that day.

During advising meetings, several of you have indicated you were interested in taking Calculus next semester. I recommend that you take the Calculus Placement Exam, if you are considering Calculus in the spring. The exam is non-binding. In other words, the score you get doesn't dictate what level of math you must take; it merely provides a recommendation.

Everyone should have access to this exam through the Placement Exam course in Canvas: https://canvas.umw.edu/courses/629052. If you want to take the Calculus exam, but you can't access this course for some reason, please let me know as soon as possible.

Thanks,

Initial Blog Post (due Tuesday by noon)

Reflect upon the following questions in your initial blog post, based upon the readings this week and your own experiences and opinions:

How much of our online content and identity should we be able to archive?

Our original posts/content?

Our comments and interactions?

What others say about our content?

Do you use any strategies now to archive or backup your online content? What are they?

What should be done with our online content once we pass away? What is the purpose of an online memorial? Where should it be? Should be static or dynamic?

What do questions of archiving our post-life digital identity tell us about the meaning of our digital identity itself?

Share your revised thesis statement for your paper in this post, as well.

Thursday Class Activity

We will be doing one final peer editing session on your papers in class this Thursday. You MUST bring a paper copy of your paper to class to exchange with a partner. You will also be required to turn that revised document into me next Tuesday (10/27) after you've submitted your Canvas paper the previous Friday (10/23).

Revision Reflection

If you want to complete the revision reflection, download this document. Use the questions in it to draft a 1-2 page (at least 1 page) reflection on the revision and editing process you undertook between the first and final drafts.

You will turn this optional assignment in on Canvas with your final paper next Friday.

Advising

If you haven't yet, schedule your advising appointment with me!!

This is a short week for us, so there's a bit less going on work-wise.

Blog Post

You only need to do one blog post this week, and it should be a reflection upon building out your personal Web page based on our activity in class last Thursday. Before you write this post, you'll actually need to spend some time working on your new site. Things to consider:

Think through what kind of content you'd like to include and begin building out at least the structure for that content, if not the content itself.

Think through navigation for your site. What links do you want to have for people to be able to explore? Use WordPress' menu feature (Appearance -> Menu) to customize your site's navigation.

What other online identities/social networks will you link to or include on your site? Start adding these.

How do you want your site to look? Play around with themes to experiment with the look of your site

Link to other things you've created online (your BtS blog, for example) or are interested in.

Remember our review of sites on Thursday and our subsequent discussion. Your site should be a reflection of yourself and the conscious choices you make about how to represent your digital identity.

In your blog post talk about the goals you have for the site and the choices you made. Screenshots should be included.

Extra Credit: create at least one Juxtapose slider comparing before/after screenshots of your site! Embed the slider in your blog post.

This post is due by Thursday at noon.
