I'm writing to remind you that your FSEM, "Beyond the Selfie," will be requiring presentations this coming Tuesday and/or Thursday. (We will probably get through them all on Tuesday, so don't count on waiting until Thursday.)

I've added a lot of detail to the Final Project Presentation assignment that I hope will help you put things together. Please make sure to review all those instructions, and please ask if you have any questions. I also recommend seeking out the assistance of the Speaking Center to practice your speech or get feedback on your preparation.

Finally, the Presentation assignment instructions now include an order of speakers, which we will follow. If you're not ready to give your presentation when it's your turn then you'll fail this assignment.

See you Tuesday!

Several of you were out yesterday and/or Tuesday, so since we're nearing the end of the semester, I thought it would help to remind you all about what remains.

First, there's one more "end-of-the-week" post due today at 5:00. It's based on something we did in class yesterday, but you can do it on your own as well.

This coming Tuesday, November 24th, your Digital Project is due at 5:00. To turn it in, create a blog post where you link to, embed, attach, or in some way share your project, and then submit that blog entry here in Canvas.

On Tuesday, we can still look at and tweak your projects as needed, but you should work this weekend to finish your edits. Some general advice: make sure your research is evident! You need to have at least seven quality sources, but you can't just list them at the end: they must be used in your project to support the claims in your argument.

On Tuesday, we can also talk about your presentations, which you'll be delivering on the following Tuesday, December 1.

If you have any questions, let me know.

Best,

For class on Thursday, we'll be discussing the real-world dystopia scenario of the US Government's surveillance program, specifically the way that scenario is presented in the documentary, Citizenfour.

I found a website where you can watch the whole thing for free:

https://thoughtmaybe.com/citizenfour/

Please view at least the first 20 minutes so that we can talk about the specifics of the NSA's surveillance program and its implications for all of us. As you watch, pay attention to the documentary's tone and the arguments it embeds in its presentation of these events and programs.

Ask yourself, who are the "bad guys" here, and what have they done to earn that status? Who are the heroes? How does the film try and motivate you?

We will discuss these things on Thursday. Also, don't forget to do the module on Effective Visual Aids by Wednesday night, and please keep working on your projects.

Just wanted to make sure you all see the assigned activity for Thursday. This will replace your usual Friday reflection post, it just requires some preparation on your part.

Check the instructions on the assignment page.

Review the assigned reading material from today, and also read or listen to this piece from NPR for more potential evidence on the "pro" side of the debate we'll conduct on Thursday.

I want to start class today with a warmup activity on something called "algorithmic bias". This activity has several steps, so I'm communicating them here as an announcement to make it easy for you all to have the instructions.

1. You'll work together with others at your table. Each table has a keyword:

Table 1 = "CEO"

Table 2 = "Professor"

Table 3 = "Programmer"

Table 4 = "Hands"

2. Do a google image search for your keyword
3. Survey the first 30 image results that include real people in them.
4. Record (using a spreadsheet, for example) the demographics you see represented in that 30. Use very broad categories like, "White male", "White female", "Black male", etc.
5. Analyze how far apart, statistically, are the most common category and the second most common demographic category? How far into the results do you have to go to see something other than that most common category?
6. Reflect. What does this mean? What do your findings reveal about algorithmic bias? Does algorithmic bias exist in your example, and if so, why? What are the algorithms that determined the result you found?
7. Respond by finding or creating a reaction GIF that encapsulates your feelings about your research and sharing it on one of your blogs.

I've updated the instructions for Week 9's initial post assignment: https://canvas.umw.edu/courses/1030023/assignments/4944207

I realize this is somewhat belated, so I've scaled back from what we initially planned. We'll spend time in class talking about digital identity after you're dead, but we'll also need to do some work on your project Scripts which are due Friday (and which many of you need to do a lot of work on.)

So do your best with the Week 9 initial post, and please keep working on your scripts.

I'm still out of town, obviously, but I just heard from Gwen about the revising workshop who reported that it didn't go well. Apparently, you all told her that you just had outlines and no scripts or essays to work on, which is frustrating to me because you are supposed to have scripts. That is the point.

Many of you received Ds or Fs on the first draft of your script because you wrote it as an outline and not an actual script. Perhaps I wasn't clear in the videos, but if you just have an outline at this point, you're not doing well on this project. If you received a D or lower, there's a good chance of you receiving a similar grade on the project and on the class because you aren't doing the necessary steps at this stage to make your project successful in later stages.

Most of you need a massive triage, in other words; it's disappointing to me that you dismissed that opportunity to do that today.

Welcome back! By now, hopefully you've seen the grade that I've assigned your first drafts, and hopefully you've viewed the video I uploaded to give you some general feedback. About those drafts, many of you have received grades that you may not be happy with. In many cases, that's because the main part of your script, the "content", was incomplete, and in the videos I've created for each of you, I try and describe some next steps for you to start making that complete.

Part of that process is revising the work you've already completed to make it stronger, so for this purpose, tomorrow's class will be a revision workshop.

To prepare for this, print out and bring with you two copies of your script. If you've made additions or improvements since you submitted in last week, bring in the most current version.

Tomorrow's workshop will be led by Gwen Hale, director of the writing center, who will guide you all in reviewing and revising your work and each other's work.

Dr. Hale will be leading class entirely since, unfortunately, I have to be out of town for the rest of the week. I'll be in touch shortly about what to do to prepare for next week and for advising.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hopefully you're at the point in your project where you've done some research and started honing your argument. As you look ahead (not that far ahead) to preparing your script, you should start considering your options for the format of your project. Many of you, when we've talked, have been pretty vague about what your project will look like, and that's understandable at this point. So my colleagues and I have prepared a resource to help you come up with some more specific ideas.
I'm writing with some new instructions for class tomorrow. We're going to be joined by a guest, Brian Strecker, who will be talking with you about and helping you work through some processes related to your Spring registration. I'm your academic advisor, and I'll be meeting with you all individually as you get ready to register, but Mr. Stecker is a "Student Success Coordinator" -- basically a "super advisor" -- who can help with more complex questions that may come up.

Tomorrow, we're going to teach you how to run your degree evaluation and show you how to use that to plan your classes for the Spring. To prepare for that, please:

1. Plan to bring a laptop

The computers in the room are of course available, but since the degree evaluation will include confidential information about your academic record, I don't want you to display that on those monitors.

2. Run a degree evaluation yourself

You can find this in Banner and from the registrar's webpage (academics.umw.edu/registrar/).

3. Pick up and bring with you a copy of the 2015-16 course catalog

These are free. You can find them in Lee Hall and probably a few other places as well.

In other news, I've updated the instructions for the first draft of your project script. Please read that and start working. After the advising session tomorrow, I'll use the remaining time to meet with as many of you as I can about your projects and what I think you need to be focusing on as you prepare your script.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Yesterday in class, we attempt to talk about a wide range of topics intersecting on gender as it relates to identity online. I expressed some disappointment that few, if any of you, had really prepared for that discussion by reading all of the material. So for tomorrow, I really want to focus on that first essay in the list, "A Rape in Cyberspace," by Julian Dibbell.

This is a different kind of article than what we've been reading lately, so be patient with it. It's written in a sort of quirky way, and the topic it's discussing is fairly disturbing. Still, there's a crucial question at the heart of the article that we need to grapple with. Your job in reading it is to figure out what that Big Question is, and decide what you think about it.

We also need to talk about and do a few other things, of course, but mainly, to prepare for tomorrow, bring your notes, comments and questions about Dibbell's piece so we can discuss it.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for your work this week. I don't know if we really got to the bottom of anything in terms of race online, but I think we had some good conversations. Next week, we'll continue with another important but potentially difficult inquiry into gender and online identity. Your readings are listed in the Week 4 Initial Post assignment along with some instructions, but I'll list them below as well for your convenience. None of these are quite as long or as dense as either of the two articles from last week, but I want you to give them the same critical attention so that we can at least start our discussion from the standpoint of what these articles are talking about.
