What are the treatments or shampoos for Seborrheic Dermatitis?

Seborrheic dermatitis is a disorder of skin which is mostly oily in nature. It sometimes resembles the other skin diseases which are commonly known as Psoriasis, Eczema, Rosacea etc. But proper diagnosis by a medical expert is necessary before applying any medication.

Symptoms :

Seborrheic dermatitis affects primarily the scalp and the trunk. Symptoms like scales and redness may also be seen on the ears or the face. It may cause scaly patches and dandruff. The root of this inflammation is not known, but it is assumed that hormones, genetical factors, mental stress are likely to play a vital role. Seborrheic dermatitis may affect any age group of people, be it new born babies or senior citizens as well.

Treatment :

Doctors very often suggest medicated shampoos as a primary line of treatment. These shampoos help in easing discomfort and stop flaking.

  1. Shampoos with salicylic acid : Neutrogena T/Sal Therapeutic contains salicylic acid as an active ingredient and these shampoos are formulated to control scaling of the scalp. 
  2. Shampoos with ketoconazole : Ketoconazole is ideal for antifungal treatment and controls fungal growth which causes dandruff and other similar conditions. It also possess properties which fights against any type of inflammation. Shampoos namely Nizoral Anti-dandruff contains this type of ingredient. Ketoconazole has no side effect and is considered to be absolutely safe. People may use ketoconazole shampoos once or twice a week after the symptoms subside. 
  3. Shampoos with selenium sulfide : Selenium sulfide is an antifungal agent, which mainly target an yeast namely Pityrosporum ovale. It helps in reducing the dandruff on the scalp. Simulteneously it reduces itching and irritation. Shampoos containing selenium sulfide are available in the market under the brand name of Head & Shoulders Clinical, Selsun Blue etc. A rare side effect of hyperpigmentation is reported with this ingredient. Odour and oily sensation on hair is a common side effect with this ingredient. 
  4. Shampoos with pyrithione zinc : In most of the anti-dandruff shampoos containing pyrithione zinc available in the market, have antifungal and antimicrobial properties. It also prevents inflammation and itching. Dermatologists often suggest to wash the affected areas with the soaps containing pyrithione zinc. Mountain Falls Dandruff Shampoo, Head & Shoulders Extra Strength and Head & Shoulders Dry Scalp Care containing 1% to 2% concentration of pyrithione zinc are available in the market.
  5. Shampoos with coal tar : Coal tar controls fungal infection and reduces inflammation. It also decrease the production of sebum. Research has proved that coal tar is similarly effective as ketoconazole. Shampoos containing coal tar as ingredient are Neutrogena T/Gel Extra Strength, MG217 and Psoria Trax etc. It has been observed that coal tar has several side effects. Contact dermatitis is one of them, which may develop on the fingers. Also signs of nausea, vomiting or black urine may be observed. Also there remains a possibility of developing squamous cell carcinoma.

Natural remedies :

  1. Amongst the natural remedies, coconut oil is considered to be the first and foremost item. It has antifungal and antimicrobial properties. A very good result can be obtained if the scalp is washed thoroughly by shampoo for seborrheic dermatitis followed by applying a table spoon of coconut oil on the scalp. After a few hours, the oil to be washed out. This process to be followed twice or thrice a week. 
  2. Apple cider vinegar contains malic acid which helps to remove extra skin cells from the scalp. Besides, its acetic acid effectively acts against the bacteria and yeasts which cause dandruff. After washing the hair, 1 part of apple cider vinegar and 1 part of water may be mixed applied on the scalp and leave it for hours. After that, it may be washed out.
  3. Tea tree oil can also be used for its antifungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
  4. Raw honey has antimicrobial and moisturizing properties. It contains vitamins, minerals, proteins and enzymes. Its application on scalp may prevent the skin from being infected and give a soothing effect. 2 table spoon of raw honey mixed with 3 cups of cold water may be applied on the scalp and massaged with fingers. After some time it may be washed out. 

Conclusion :

Skin is a very sensitive part of our body and every possible care should be taken about its proper hygiene and health. All sorts of precautions to be taken against any type of fungal or bacterial infection be it on the scalp or face or on any part of our body.
