Good analysis of video games (or any other text) relies on an informed engagement with critical context. To practice, complete this short homework assignment for Monday, January 26.
Browse the articles at GameStudies.org to familiarize yourself with the types of content there.
Find some article at GameStudies.org that deals with a game you are familiar with; ideally, one you've played recently. Read that article carefully, and take notes.
Using Google (or whatever) locate a journalistic review of that game. MetaCritic.com is a good place to look for reviews. Find one that seems well-informed and read it carefully.
In the text box provide or in a document you upload, answer the following questions:
- How did the Game Studies article change what you understood about this game?
- How is the journalistic review different from the Game Studies article?
- If you disagree with any aspects of either, what did those authors miss or get wrong?
